Job overview:
The Overhead Lines Technician is responsible for overseeing and supporting the maintenance, inspection, and repair of the transmission line infrastructure. In this role, the technician works closely with contractors to ensure the quality and safety of maintenance activities. The technician assists engineers in supervising contractors, conducting field inspections, and responding to emergencies while ensuring compliance with safety standards and operational procedures.
Key responsibilities:
- Collaborate with contractors to monitor and verify the quality of work performed on overhead transmission lines.
- Assist engineers in supervising contractor activities, ensuring adherence to project specifications, safety standards, and best practices.
- Conduct regular inspections of transmission line routes, documenting any right-of-way (ROW) encroachments and reporting issues to management.
- Respond promptly to line trips or faults by coordinating and supervising emergency line patrols.
- Support contractors in identifying and addressing faults, ensuring a quick and safe restoration of service.
- Supervise third-party projects and activities crossing or affecting the transmission line ROW to prevent disruptions.
- Oversee and participate in environmental and mechanical inspections, including ESDD (Equivalent Salt Deposit Density) and NSDD (Non-Soluble Deposit Density) assessments of insulators, in collaboration with contractors.
- Supervise drone inspections on-site, ensuring data accuracy and appropriate follow-up actions.
- Assist in the preparation of observation reports, highlighting key findings and recommendations from field inspections.
- Document and report on maintenance activities, sand removal needs, and joint estimations for future planning.
- Perform safety checks before and during maintenance activities, ensuring all operations are carried out according to safety protocols.
- Promote adherence to GCCIA safety standards among contractors and internal teams.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, legal developments, and emerging trends in contract management.
Education:
Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
Skills
- Experience in supervising contractor work and ensuring compliance with work procedures.
- Strong understanding of transmission line maintenance practices, including safety and quality assurance.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations, particularly during emergency response scenarios.
- Proficiency in using inspection tools, including drone technology for overhead line assessments.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills to coordinate effectively with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and produce detailed reports.
